Despite its subtlety, cavity sliding door systems can make a significant difference in a home’s interior design. Although many homes are built with timber doors already installed, it’s good to know what type of timber sliding door suits your home. The kind of construction plays a key role in the door’s aesthetic appeal and quality.

Here are four of the most popular types of interior timber sliding doors.

Solid Timber

Solid wood sliding doors provide a natural and warm look to any room. From classic hardwood such as mahogany to softwood such as pine, solid wood doors are made of various wood species. The cost of this type of door varies due to the different kinds of wood species used. Some of the most popular types of wood include walnut, maple, juniper and cherry.

Regardless of the kind of timber, all solid wood doors can expand or shrink due to humidity and changing temperature. This is one of the reasons why it’s best to not install a solid wood door in a bathroom or room that’s exposed to a lot of moisture.

Solid-Core

Solid-core sliding doors are an alternative to solid wood doors. Solid-core doors offer temperature and sound insulation just like solid wood doors but at an affordable price. These doors are usually built with a moulded composite or an exterior skin made of plywood. They are filled with a wood fibre blend that’s almost as durable as solid timber.

Hollow-Core

Hollow-core doors are known to be the most budget-friendly option for an interior timber door. They are made with a lighter type of plywood or moulded composite as compared to solid-core doors that use heavier versions. Since this door is hollow, they are not as durable as other timber doors. Also, they do not have sound insulation properties as their solid counterparts.

Fibreboard

Medium density fibreboard (MDF) is a type of timber product made from recycled wood fibres. It is a popular wooden interior sliding door due to its durability. Unlike traditional wood doors, an MDF door lacks a wood grain texture and does not warp, making it smooth and easy to paint. MDF sliding doors are suitable for installation as room partitions as they can be made with single or double panels.
