As Australian construction moves further toward inclusive, future-proof design, accessibility is no longer simply a compliance requirement – it’s a standard of care. Builders, architects, and designers are increasingly expected to create environments that support independent movement, reduce barriers, and enhance day-to-day usability for all occupants.

For interior sliding door systems, this shift has driven significant industry transformation. When applied correctly, these systems can solve many mobility challenges that traditional swinging doors present.

One of the most influential documents guiding these choices is AS 1428.1-2009, the Australian Standard for Design for Access and Mobility. Understanding this standard – and how it shapes door selection – is critical for ensuring compliant, functional, and truly inclusive spaces.


Why Door Choice Matters for Accessibility

Traditional swinging doors often create physical barriers for people with reduced strength, limited reach, mobility aids, or impaired grip. Opening a hinged door requires leaning, pulling force, and manoeuvring space that isn’t always available—especially in small rooms, narrow corridors, and compact residential settings.

This is where cavity sliding doors make a meaningful difference. By removing the swing arc entirely, sliding systems allow users to approach, open, and close doors with far less physical effort and without obstructing circulation pathways. This aligns strongly with the intent and functional outcomes of AS 1428.1-2009.


Key AS 1428.1-2009 Requirements Builders Must Consider

Below are the critical design requirements to understand when integrating sliding door systems into accessible projects.

1. Minimum Clear Opening – 850 mm

The standard requires a minimum clear opening width of 850mm on a continuous accessible path of travel. This measurement is taken from the face of the open door to the closing jamb. The standard Triline cavity slider size to meet this requirement is the 870mm cavity.

For sliding systems, this means ensuring the door leaf size and track configuration allow for a true 850mm clearance—not just nominal door width. For Triline cavity sliders this would be a minimum door width of 1020mm.

2. Circulation Space Requirements

Accessible circulation space is essential for wheelchair and frame users to approach, reach, and operate the door comfortably. AS 1428.1-2009 outlines minimum lateral and frontal clearances based on the door type.

For pocket door systems:

  • The required circulation space must match the dimensions specified in the standard’s tables (Figure 32).
  • Because the door retracts into the wall, users do not need additional swing space, making circulation planning more predictable and often more efficient.

For surface-mounted sliding systems (where applicable), AS 1428.1 specifies additional clearances unless the door is automated.

3. Luminance Contrast – 30% Minimum

To support users with visual impairment, the standard mandates a minimum 30% luminance contrast between key doorway elements such as:

  • Door leaf and jamb
  • Door leaf and wall
  • Architraves and wall

Even on modern concealed systems, contrast must remain sufficient for visibility and safety.

4. Door Hardware and Operational Force

Hardware plays a major role in accessibility. AS 1428.1 requires that:

  • Handles must be operable with one hand.
  • ‘D’-type handles are recommended for sliding doors.
  • The force required to open or close the door must not exceed 20N.
  • Cavity door must be set up to have minimum 60mm clearance between face of split jamb and door handle.

For cavity sliders, this often means ensuring the door sits slightly proud of the cavity so that projecting handles do not interfere with operation.


Why Sliding Doors Are Becoming the Industry Standard for Accessibility

Sliding systems not only help meet AS 1428.1-2009 – they often exceed the user experience expectations behind the standard. With no swing arc, minimal operating force, and the ability to better integrate with circulation requirements, sliding solutions reduce barriers for ageing users, people with disability, and anyone carrying objects or navigating tight spaces.

As the industry continues to move toward universal design, sliding systems—particularly well-engineered cavity sliding doors, robust internal sliding door track systems, and thoughtful applications of the pocket door system—are rapidly becoming the “need to have” rather than the “nice to have”.

The future of accessible design will be defined by those who adopt smarter, more intuitive solutions. And as builders and architects continue to elevate inclusivity in their projects, sliding door systems will sit at the centre of that transformation.
